It was built between 1830 and 1848 AD by Muhammad Ali Pasha inside the Citadel of Salah al-Din, which has long been the seat of Ayyubid rule, then of the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and even the Alawite dynasty.
After the seat of government was transformed into Abdeen Palace in the era of Khedive Ismail, the founder of the modern Egyptian state, Muhammad Ali, carried out a major reform that included the walls of the castle with the construction of a number of palaces, schools and diwans, and among these buildings was the magnificent mosque that shone in the center of Cairo.
The total area is 5 thousand square meters, where the mosque is divided into the eastern section prepared for prayer and the western section consisting of a courtyard in the middle of which is an ablution watering can. The walls of the mosque and the shoulders that bear the dome were covered with alabaster marble from the inside and outside, and gilded inscriptions were added to all the walls on top of the marble cladding.
The main dome of the mosque is 52 meters high and 21 meters in diameter. The mosque is more beautiful thanks to the eight half domes on the sides and corners of the main dome, in addition to the half of the dome on the side of the mihrab. The two main minarets rise above the mosque 82 meters above the ground.
The mosque includes what is believed to be the highest pulpit in the Islamic world, which is the wooden pulpit decorated with gilded decorations, and it is in fact the original pulpit of the mosque, while the alabaster pulpit currently located on the left side of the mihrab was made in 1939 by order of King Farouk.
